I’ve been studying a lot about the nutrients present in fruits and veggies and was interested how many there are in total.
I examined the numbers and discovered the following.
There are around 3000 recognized fruits and veggies. 1000 of them are vegetables, while 2000 are fruits.
There are undoubtedly more unusual and undiscovered fruits and vegetables that might add to this amount throughout time, but at the time of writing, there are 3000 in total.
I’ll disclose the most popular fruit in the world based on how many people eat it, as well as a list of the top ten most popular fruits in the world, below.
I’ll also offer some statistics on what most people believe to be the worst fruit.
In addition, the most popular fruits in the United States are described.

What is the world’s favorite fruit?
So, which fruit is number one, the fruit that outperforms all others?
This is the world’s most popular fruit.
Tomatoes are the most popular fruit in the world. Bananas and watermelons follow.
Tomatoes are produced almost twice as much as bananas globally each year.
Watermelons are produced in almost the same quantity as bananas each year.
As a result, tomatoes are the obvious winner.
You may have heard that tomatoes are a fruit, even though they are not often thought of as such.
In scientific terms, fruits and vegetables are distinguished not by their flavor, but rather by how they develop. Yet, in strictly mathematical terms
A vegetable, for example, is usually the plant’s roots, stem, or leaves.
Carrots, celery, and lettuce are examples. A fruit, on the other hand, is the seed pod.
As you may have realized, several well-known vegetables are really fruits, such as cucumbers and pumpkins.
To refer to pumpkin as a vegetable, you must be referring to the stem, roots, or leaves.
Nevertheless, most people do not ingest the pumpkin stem, roots, or leaves.
As a result, it is often recognized as a fruit.
Yet, this is a little-known truth.
What are the 10 most popular fruits in the world?
Some fruits, such as bananas and apples, spring to mind as some of the most easily accessible fruits at grocery shops and specialty fruit and vegetable stores.
But I was curious about the top ten most popular.
Following are the findings of various research on worldwide fruit output.
Based on consumption, the top ten fruits are:
- Tomatoes
- Bananas
- Watermelons
- Apples
- Grapes
- Oranges
- Guavas and mangoes
- Plantains
- Clementines, Tangerines, and Mandarins
- Pineapples
World Atlas supplied the data.
The fruits on the list above are the most widely grown across the globe.
Surprisingly, China produces the most tomatoes and accounts for 30% of total tomatoes cultivated each year.
Also, the following nations produce the most bananas:
- India
- China
- Indonesia
- Ecuador
- Brazil
Bananas grow best in tropical humid conditions, and based on the list of nations, it seems that the majority of output is in countries around the equator.
It makes sense given that the farther you travel from the equator, the colder it becomes.
What is the king of all fruits?
You may have heard others utter the phrase the king of fruits, but didnt know what it was.
The durian is regarded as the king of all fruits.
Jackfruit, on the other hand, may be regarded a close second.
Durian has a terrible odor.
To the extent that it is prohibited from being carried on public transportation in South East Asian nations where it is commonly sold.
The flesh of a durian is soft and golden in hue. It also has sharp and prickly skin, as you may know.
Durian grows on extremely huge trees and is popular in South East Asia.
It does, however, grow in tropical climates. Jackfruit may grow to be very huge.
I just published an essay on the distinctions between jackfruit and durian. Check it out [here, jackfruit vs. durian].
What is America’s favorite fruit?
America has one of the world’s greatest economies; thus, what is America’s favorite fruit?
According to USDA statistics, apples and oranges are the most popular fruits in America.
Nonetheless, it is because of apple and orange juice that apples and oranges are America’s favorite fruits.
Bananas are the most popular for merely eating the fruit.
Below are some tables that compare the most often eaten fruits depending on whether they are fresh fruit or fruit juice.
I also combined the fruit juice and fresh fruit to see which was the most eaten overall.
Fruit | Fresh fruit |
Bananas | 14.0% |
Apples | 9.5% |
Oranges | 3.0% |
Fruit | Juice |
Oranges | 17.0% |
Apples | 13.0% |
Bananas | 0.0% |
Fruit | Fresh fruit + fruit juice |
Apples | 22.5% |
Oranges | 20.0% |
Bananas | 14.0% |
As you can see, bananas are the most popular fresh fruit, yet apple and orange juice are the most popular juices.
Apples are the most popular combination of juice and fresh fruit.
What is the most hated fruit?
I enjoy most fruits, but there have been periods in my life when I avoided acidic fruits like starfruit.
My taste has evolved, and I now like sour fruits.
But I was wondering about the fruit that most people regard to be the worst.
I gathered some information from Reddit postings and discovered the following:
The most despised fruit was determined to be dragonfruit.
Grapefruit, durian, and tomato follow.
Other fruits, such as blackberries and apples, were rated once.
Dragonfruit, on the other hand, gets much more votes.
Here’s a table with the information I gleaned from people’s responses:
Fruit | Votes |
Dragon fruit | 5 |
Grapefruit | 4 |
Durian | 4 |
Tomato | 3 |
Bananas | 2 |
Peach | 2 |
Apples | 1 |
Tamarillos | 1 |
Starfruit | 1 |
Blackberries | 1 |
Mango | 1 |
Pears | 1 |
Cantaloupe/rock melon | 1 |
Gooseberries | 1 |
Papaya | 1 |
Kiwi | 1 |
Total number of votes: 31
The amount of votes ensures that the data is somewhat accurate.
Yet, since the audience is confined to Reddit users, it is impossible to say with confidence that dragonfruit is the most despised fruit.
In truth, many individuals throughout the globe have never had dragonfruit, so this may be slightly skewed.
Surprisingly, when participants were asked why they didn’t like specific fruits, the majority said it was because they thought them nasty.
Nonetheless, for some of the fruits that received just one vote, the respondents had a valid explanation, such as they didn’t like the texture.
What fruits have the most vitamin C?
Vitamin C is proven to be very beneficial to your overall health.
So I was curious as to which fruits have the highest vitamin C.
- 93mg kiwi fruit 150 percent of your DI per 100g
- 60g papaya 85% of your DI in one hundred grams
- Citrus fruits, such as oranges, contain 53mg of DI per 100g.
- Pineapple contains 47mg (88% of your DI) per 100g.
- Mango 36mg per 100g = 60% of your DI
- Cantaloupe has 36mg of vitamin C per 100g, which accounts for 50% of your DI.
The common belief that oranges are rich in vitamin C is correct.
As you may be aware, 100g is around half a cup.
A typical orange contains half a cup to a cup of flesh.
As a result, eating two oranges each day will provide you with the appropriate quantity of vitamin C.
What fruits have the most calories?
While attempting to reduce weight, it is essential to eat meals with normal or low calorie counts.
In addition, calorie-dense meals should be avoided.
So I was wondering which fruits contain the most calories.
Raisins have the highest calories of any fruit.
Dates, on the other hand, are a close second.
Raisins and dates provide around 300 calories per half-cup.
They contain around three times the calories of most other fruits.

According to the table, most fruits contain less than 100 calories per 3.4 oz, while only 10% of fruits have more than 100 calories per 3.4 oz (100 g).
The most popular fruits are apples, oranges, and bananas.
Apples and oranges contain very little calories, with just 50 calories per 3.4 oz (100 g).
Bananas, on the other hand, contain around 89 calories.
You may have noticed that avocado is categorized as a fruit.
And the majority of people would reply, “Wait a minute, avocado is a vegetable.”
Several vegetables are formally categorized as fruits, despite the fact that they are savory rather than sweet like most other fruits.
Cucumbers, eggplant, and tomatoes are among examples. Many individuals are also concerned about whether the sugar in fruits might cause obesity.
I just checked into various scientific research to see whether this is the case.
You may read my post regarding whether sugar in fruit can cause obesity [here, does sugar in fruit cause obesity].
