Does Fruit Keep You in Ketosis? [Keto Compliant]

Rate this post

I’ve been considering about trying the keto diet, but I was wondering how much fruit I could consume and if it was keto-friendly.

I performed some investigation and this is what I discovered.

In general, 3 to 4 pieces of fruit per day will not cause you to exit ketosis.

To stay in ketosis, you should eat fewer than 100g of carbs each day.

A typical piece of fruit has 30g to 50g of carbs.

In this post, I’ll go through the various types of fruit and how much carbohydrates they contain.

While following a keto diet, you must also restrict yourself to low-carb veggies, so I’ll include a list of them as well so you can figure out how many fruits and vegetables you may consume in a day to stay in ketosis.

How Much Fruit Can You Eat on Keto?

Ketosis is an excellent method for burning fat quickly.

So, as I was studying more about the keto diet, I was curious about how much fruit one could consume on the keto diet.

Here’s what I discovered:

To stay in ketosis, limit yourself to 3 to 4 pieces of fruit each day.

Ketosis is accomplished by consuming fewer than 100g of carbs each day.

This quantity is found in a typical piece of fruit.

Some fruits, however, have a lower or greater carbohydrate content than others.

Nutritionists suggest consuming four pieces of fruit every day (source), thus you should strive to be just on the verge of ketosis.

While eating fruit when in ketosis, you should keep track of how many carbohydrates you consume.

The table below illustrates how many carbs are in 3.5 oz 7 oz (200g) of popular fruit.

This is about comparable to a cup of fruit.

Fruit Carbohydrates per 7 oz (200g) – 1 serving
Apples 28g
Banana 46g
Orange 24g
Grapefruit 22g
Strawberries 16g
Blackberries 20g
Rock melon/cantaloupe 16g
Watermelon 16g

As you can see, there is some variance in the amount of carbs found in fruits.

Carbohydrates are abundant in bananas and apples, for example.

How Many Berries Can You Eat a Day on Keto?

Berries are a wonderful delicacy that may be eaten on their own or in a variety of dishes.

But how many of these can you consume on the keto diet?

On average, you may consume 4 to 5 cups of strawberries each day and still be in ketosis.

1 cup strawberries has around 20g of carbs.

To stay in ketosis, limit your carbohydrate intake to less than 100g per day.

Carbohydrates are likely to be obtained from other foods such as vegetables and fruits.

As a result, on the keto diet, you may consume as many strawberries as you like.

But, you will need to limit your intake of other fruits.

Here is a table to demonstrate what I mean:

Strawberries you eat Other fruits and vegetables you can eat
1 cup 4 cups
2 cups 3 cups
3 cups 2 cups
4 cups 1 cup
5 cups zero

You’re unlikely to consume more than 3 cups of strawberries in a day since you’ll become tired of the flavor and need potatoes or anything more savory.

But that should give you a good idea.

Yet, in order to stick to the keto diet, you must plan your meals ahead of time.

Therefore, make a spreadsheet with the fruits and veggies you like to eat and pick which fruit you’ll consume on which day.

And how much of each you’ll consume.

Can You Eat Berries Everyday on Keto?

Some fruits, such as blueberries, are very appealing to me.

So I was wondering whether I could have berries every day on the keto diet.

I ran some calculations based on the amount of carbs in berries.

Here’s what I discovered:

On the keto diet, you may consume berries every day as a general rule.

Berries include around 20g of carbs per serving.

In this situation, 1 serving is 7 oz (200g), or about 1 cup.

As a result, if you consume one cup of berries every day, you still have space for around four cups of other fruits and vegetables.

As a consequence, eating berries every day on the keto diet is absolutely OK.

Can Too Many Strawberries Kick You Out of Ketosis?

Strawberries are one of my favorite fruits; can you eat a lot of them and still remain in ketosis?

You can eat as many strawberries as you want and yet be in ketosis.

1 cup of strawberries has 16g of carbs.

It is suggested that you should not eat more than 100g of carbs each day to stay in ketosis.

Therefore you can consume around 6 cups of strawberries while being in ketosis.

6 cups of strawberries is a lot. That many strawberries would be difficult for anybody to consume.

If you ate as many strawberries as you could, I’d say the typical person could eat around 3 to 4 cups unless they really pushed themselves.

Hence, in my view, as long as you remain in ketosis, you may eat as many strawberries as you want.

The essential thing to keep in mind is not to exceed 100g of carbs from different fruits and vegetables.

For example, if you consume 1 cup of strawberries, you can only have 4 cups of other fruits and vegetables.

Will Sugar From Fruit Kick You Out of Ketosis?

Fruit includes glucose, which is a kind of sugar.

Yet, on the keto diet, can the sugar in fruit knock you out of ketosis?

Fruit sugar is comparable to fruit carbs.

It is likely that eating too much fruit in combination with other veggies that contain carbs can cause you to exit ketosis.

Nevertheless, you’d have to eat more than 5 cups of fruit for it to happen.

A reasonably healthy individual may consume 5 cups of fruits and vegetables each day.

For example, kids might eat a couple bananas with breakfast or 1 cup of fruit with morning tea.

They may then enjoy a salad for lunch.

That’s one more cup of veggies.

So as they progress throughout the day is feasible to get to 5 cups of fruit and vegetables which would theoretically take you out of ketosis.

Several fruits and vegetables have less carbohydrates than others. As a result, they are favored if you are on the keto diet.

Below is a list of some low-carb fruits and vegetables:

  • Watermelon
  • Berries
  • Cantaloupe
  • Avocados
  • Honeydew
  • Peaches

Low carb veggies include:

  • Cucumber
  • The iceberg lettuce
  • Celery
  • Mushrooms in white
  • Spinach
  • Chard (Swiss chard)
  • Broccoli
  • Cayenne peppers

What Fruits Can I Eat on a Keto Diet?

Some fruits have a high sugar content, which indicates they have a high carbohydrate content.

As a result, you should be mindful that consuming too many of them might cause you to exit ketosis.

On the whole, you can consume almost any fruit on the keto diet.

The essential thing to remember is to avoid eating too many fruits that are heavy in carbs.

Bananas, grapes, and mango are among examples.

Bananas have around three times the carbohydrates of other fruits.

But, as long as you keep track of your overall carb consumption and don’t go above 100g per day, you should be able to remain in ketosis.

1 big banana (about 1 cup) has 46g of carbohydrates.

As a result, if you consume around 2 bananas, you’ll be at the daily carb limit to stay in ketosis.

Are Cucumbers Keto?

You may still be attempting to understand the keto diet and what foods you may consume to stay in ketosis.

Can you, for example, consume cucumber on the keto diet?

Cucumbers are generally safe to consume on a keto diet.

Cucumbers contain around 8g of carbs per 7 oz (200g), or little under a cup.

To stay in ketosis, limit your carbohydrate intake to less than 100g per day.

As a result, you may consume around 10 cups of cucumber while being in ketosis.

Hence, on the keto diet, feel free to consume it as a snack or add it to your favorite salads.

Is White Rice OK on Keto?

White rice is wonderful when paired with fried veggies. White rice pudding is another popular option.

Is white rice, however, keto?

White rice has too many carbs to be consumed when on the keto diet. 1 cup cooked white rice has around 60g of carbs.

On a keto diet, the maximum amount of carbohydrates you should consume is 100g.

During the day, you will ingest carbohydrates-containing items.

And 1 cup of rice suffices for one meal. Hence, if you eat white rice, you will almost certainly exceed the quantity of carbohydrates you need to stay in ketosis.

Nonetheless, as long as you keep track of how many carbohydrates you consume, eating rice on occasion or on a cheat day is OK.
